Trademark registration in Serbia for foreign companies

An EU, UK or US trademark gives you no rights in Serbia. If you sell, manufacture, franchise or ship here, you file here. A foreign company cannot file on its own: it needs a Serbian representative. Our lawyer searches, files, follows and defends your mark, in writing and with fixed fees.

What you get

  • A search of the Serbian register, Madrid Monitor and EUIPO, with a short written opinion, before you pay a single official fee
  • Filing in up to 3 classes, with Latin and Cyrillic versions where it matters for your market
  • Replies to the Office's letters, publication, registration certificate and 10 years of protection from the filing date
  • Renewal reminders and, if you want, a monthly watch for similar new filings

Why a Serbian filing at all

Serbia is not in the EU, so an EU trademark stops at the border. The same goes for UK, US or Chinese registrations. A brand that is sold in Serbia without a Serbian registration can be registered by someone else first, and then you are the one who has to explain. Distributors, Amazon and marketplace sellers, franchisors and manufacturers with plants in Serbia are the companies that write to us most.

The procedure is simple once a representative is in place: filing, examination by the Intellectual Property Office in Belgrade, publication, a three-month opposition window, registration. Without objections it takes around six months.

Serbia as a base for the world

A Serbian company can file an international trademark through the Madrid system in more than 130 countries: the EU, UK, USA, China, UAE, Türkiye and others, in one application, with one representative and one language. This matters if your home country is not in the Madrid system (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Nepal, Bangladesh, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Taiwan, Hong Kong), or if you want one lawyer for the whole portfolio.

We say it plainly when a route is not worth it: for the EU alone, a direct EUIPO filing is cheaper than Madrid, and we arrange it with a partner firm in the EU. WIPO fees are the same whichever country you file from; the saving is in having one simple base and one representative.

How it works

  1. Send us the mark. Word or logo, the goods or services, and the name of the owner. Written reply within one working day with the search result and a fixed quote.
  2. Engagement letter and invoice. After payment you sign a simple power of attorney; for trademark matters in Serbia no notary or apostille is needed.
  3. Filing within two working days. You receive the filing receipt with the date that your protection runs from.
  4. Examination and publication. Four to eight months. We answer any letter from the Office and tell you in writing each time something moves.
  5. Registration. Certificate in Serbian with an English summary, renewal date in our diary.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a company in Serbia to own a Serbian trademark?

No. Any foreign person or company can own a Serbian trademark. You only need a representative in Serbia, which is what we do.

Does a Serbian trademark protect me in the EU?

No. Serbia is outside the EU system. For the EU we arrange a direct EUIPO filing through a partner firm, or add the EU as a designation in a Madrid filing from your Serbian base.

Latin or Cyrillic?

Serbia uses both scripts. For a brand in English or another foreign language we normally file the version you actually use; for brands aimed at Serbian consumers often both.

How long does registration take?

Around six months without objections. Protection runs from the filing date, not from the registration date.

Can you file for an online shop or Amazon seller?

Yes, that is a large part of our work. Typical classes are 35 (retail), 9 (software and electronics), 25 (clothing), 3 (cosmetics) and 5 (supplements).

Who signs the power of attorney and does it need an apostille?

The owner signs a short power of attorney. For trademark filings in Serbia a plain signature is enough: no notary, no apostille.

What if someone has already registered my brand in Serbia?

We see it in the search before you pay anything. Depending on the case there is a cancellation action for bad faith or non-use, or a coexistence agreement. We quote it separately.

Tell us what you are planning

A few lines are enough. Every message is read by our lawyer, and the first written reply is free.

  1. You send the form. WhatsApp opens with your message already written. This website stores nothing.
  2. We reply, usually the same business day. If something is missing we ask four things: citizenship, where you live and pay tax now, what the business or income is, and when you want to start.
  3. You get a written plan with fixed fees before any work begins. If we think a bank is unlikely to say yes, or Serbia is the wrong choice for you, you hear it then.
